Tammy’s Top Ten (t3 report)Tips for Eating Out

It’s the height of summer and we’re vacationing far and wide. I love this time with my family. I love to see new sights, to see what inspires them, to get to know them in a bit different setting and to just be together. While we’ve been able to rent a couple of places with kitchens where we can prepare our own food, we’re certainly finding ourselves dining out far more frequently than we do at home. Here is a list of tips that work for us.

What’s in a Name?

There is something about a wrong label that invites us to take a second glance. It can be one of those odd names like the main character in Michael Dorris’ novel Yellow Raft on Blue Water. Her name? Rayona – captured when her birth mother glanced at the rayon zipper on the front of her nightie. It can also be a error in facts like the one in the AZ Republic that described my friend Jim Mapstead as Frank Mapstead yesterday or when a lanky bachelor farmer decided to name a rutabaga after himself but labeled it as the Gilfeather Turnip.

Top Ten Tips for Emergency Food Preparedness

We’ve all seen the photos of empty grocery store shelves raided by paranoia and self-preservation when an impending doom is near. What about those who aren’t able to get to a store after doom has hit? Cyclones, ice storms, earthquakes, heat waves or disasters of the human kind like the chemical spill that poisoned a West Virginia water supply are seeming to occur with more regularity than I remember in the past.

Overcoming the Ick Factor

My husband and I were deep in the golden triangle of Thailand. We had been hiking for most of the day. It was hot and we were sweaty. And with growling intestines, we were eagerly awaiting a meal of very authentic Thai food.

Kasundi Sunday

You already know that my family is eggplant challenged. While I adore the firm meaty vegetable that takes on other flavors, I’m alone in my own home. I’ve managed to create a few acceptable dishes over the years but realistically, my family wants it off the menu.

Tammy’s Top Ten (t3 report) Apps for Food Lovers

This quirky pastime of taking photos of our food will haunt us in history books. Have you noticed? There are some beautiful dishes out there and my propensity to photograph is no exception. I’m also a recent convert to a smart phone. That said, my husband is old hat at it and has shared the delights of numerous helpful apps from the one that allows me to see what I might look like if I gained 200 lbs to the one that helps me to remember where I’ve parked in the multi-story lot. I was recently inspired by a blogger known as omnomnivores to look more deeply into food apps. While I’ve certainly not covered the gamut and the gamut is large, here are the results of my research.

Tammy’s Top Ten (t3 report) Ways to Influence Good Health Habits

It’s no secret. I’m battling extra pounds. No, I haven’t hit the obese rating on any chart but I am squeezing into once comfortable clothes and struggling against the scales. Age is not making it any easier.

Tibicos aren’t Typical

Ever wonder who was first? I do. The Colorado River Toad lives in our part of the world and is said to produce a chemical that belongs to the family of hallucinogenic tryptamines. These substances, present in the toad’s skin and venom, produce psychoactive effects when smoked or when one licks the back of the toad.

Tammy’s Top Ten (t3 report) Soups Worth Slurping

I don’t know if there’s any truth to the story that blood thins when one lives in the desert. Despite bright sun, I think it’s cold outside but I’m inside with a good book and a cuddly kid and a pot of soup on the stove. Good book + cuddly kid + soup = perfection in my book.

Starting Fresh

WordPress is sporting a plethora of New Year’s Posts. They range from why it’s a bad idea to establish resolutions to the very most resolved. There’s advice on how to create a new habit and helpful tips to eliminate the bad ones. And I am no different. There are things that I’d love to start doing, some things that I should stop, and real change that I’d like to see occur in 2012.
